Hanging out at Fiesta Island is one of the most popular activities for families in San Diego, but note that the youth campground area is off-limits to dogs. Visitors should be mindful of posted signs and restrictions.

3. Del Mar North Beach (Dog Beach)

• Restrictions: Off-leash allowed from the day after Labor Day to June 15th

Del Mar North Beach, affectionately known as Dog Beach, is a favorite among dog owners. This beach stretches nearly half a mile to the Solana Beach border, providing ample space for dogs to play.

Off-leash dogs are allowed here only in the off season, so it’s a great place to visit if you’re spending winter in San Diego. While Del Mar is about a 20-minute drive outside of San Diego, it is a popular day trip with travelers and their pets. This beach is great for playing ball and swimming, ensuring your pup gets plenty of exercise and fun.

4. Coronado Dog Beach

Coronado Dog Beach is located near the North Island U.S. Naval Station, making it easy for visitors to find.

This beach lies on Ocean Boulevard and it offers a picturesque setting for your dog to play freely. It is a dedicated off-leash area, making it a great spot for unique activities like dog surfing to add an extra layer of fun.

Sunset Park is just across from Coronado Dog Beach, but please note that dogs are not allowed in the park itself.

5. Pacific Beach

6. Mission Beach

Mission Beach offers a similar experience to Pacific Beach, with its classic boardwalk and expansive sandy areas. South Mission Beach, a popular area within Mission Beach, is especially known for its vibrant atmosphere and great amenities.

From November 1st to March 31st, dogs are allowed on Mission Beach before 9 AM and after 4 PM, and from April 1st to October 31st, they are allowed before 9 AM and after 6 PM. Dogs must be leashed at all times on the beach.

This beach is ideal for a leisurely early morning or evening stroll with your pup.

7. La Jolla Shores Beach

• Restrictions: On-leash only before 9 AM and after 6 PM (4 PM in off season)

La Jolla Shores Beach is a fantastic spot for families and their pets. While not in the heart of San Diego, the small town of La Jolla is only a 20-minute drive away and popular with visitors. With gentle waves and an expansive shoreline, it’s considered one of the best beaches in San Diego.

Scripps Pier, located at the north end of La Jolla Shores Beach, is a recognizable landmark that makes it easy to orient yourself during a visit.

Dogs are allowed before 9 AM and after 4 PM between November 1st and March 31st, and before 9 AM and after 6 PM between April 1st and October 31st. A leash must be worn at all times during the visit.

8. Cardiff State Beach

Cardiff State Beach, a 30-minute drive outside of San Diego, has gentle golden sands and warm waters, making it perfect for both swimming and sunbathing. It’s an excellent spot for a day trip with your pet.

9. Imperial Beach

Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach south of Imperial Beach Boulevard and north of Palm Avenue on the beach. You cannot walk along the beach with your pet between these two points.
